Privacy Policy

This page explains what information The Wall ("we", "the site") collects from members and visitors, why, and how it's used. The Wall is a free, member-run text ad exchange. We don't sell anything, and no credits or submissions on this site have any cash value.

Who runs this site

The Wall is operated by Phillip K. Nairne. Questions about this policy or your data can be sent to phillipknairne@cc.cc.

Information we collect

Account information: when you sign in with Google, we receive your email address, display name, and a unique account identifier from Google. We do not receive or store your Google password.
Ads you post: the headline, body text, and link you submit are shown publicly to every visitor of the site.
Profile information: if you choose to complete your profile, we store your avatar image, bio, website, link label, and any social media handles you add. Your profile page is public and linked from every ad you post.
Private messages: messages you send or receive through the sponsor/referral messaging feature are stored so the conversation can be displayed to both participants. Links are not permitted in messages.
Ad reports: if you report an ad, we store the category you selected and which ad was reported, so we can review and action it. Reports flagging content as illegal or exploitative are kept for up to 2 years — including the reported ad's text, link, and both members' names and email addresses at the time of the report — even if either account is deleted before then. This is a deliberate, limited exception to the deletion promise below, kept specifically so evidence of genuinely illegal content can't be erased by deleting an account after the fact. After 2 years, these records are automatically deleted. Reports in other categories don't have this exception and are removed along with the account as normal.
Session data: a session cookie that keeps you signed in, and, briefly during sign-in, a short-lived cookie used to verify the Google sign-in request.
View and sharing activity: when someone visits the site via your share link, we log a hashed version of their IP address and a hashed browser fingerprint — not the raw values — to verify the visit is genuine and to prevent the same visit being counted twice. We use this only to award submission credits fairly; it is not used to identify or track that visitor as a person.
Analytics: we use Google Analytics to understand overall site traffic and usage. Google Analytics uses cookies and may collect information such as your approximate location, device and browser type, and pages visited. This data is aggregated and used to improve the site, not to identify individual members.

How we use this information

We use it to run your account, show your ads and profile on the wall, calculate and award submission credits (including view-based bonuses and referral credits), operate messaging and ad reporting, understand site traffic, and detect and prevent abuse of the credit system. We don't use your email to send marketing you haven't asked for, and we don't sell or rent member data to third parties.

Third-party services

Google Sign-In is used for authentication. Google's own privacy policy governs the information Google itself holds about you.
Google Analytics is used to measure site traffic and usage, as described above.
Cloudflare hosts this site and its database, and processes requests (including IP addresses) as part of standard web hosting and security. It also stores uploaded avatar images.

Cookies

When you first visit The Wall, you'll see a cookie banner that lets you choose which categories of cookies to allow — Necessary, Preferences, Statistics, or Marketing. Necessary cookies (like your session cookie) are required for the site to work and can't be turned off. Everything else — including Google Analytics — only runs if you've given consent. You can change your choice at any time from the cookie settings link in the site footer.

Data retention

We keep account, ad, profile, and message data for as long as your account is active. You can permanently delete your account at any time from your dashboard ("Delete my account"). This immediately and permanently removes your account, your ads, your profile and avatar image, your messages, your credit history, and your sharing/referral history — it cannot be undone. If you're unable to access your dashboard, contact us at phillipknairne@cc.cc and we'll process the deletion for you. The one exception to this is described above under "Ad reports" — records of content reported as illegal or exploitative are kept for up to 2 years regardless of account deletion, specifically for safety and legal review purposes, and are automatically deleted after that.

Your rights

This site is operated from the UK, and your data is handled under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data, to have it in a portable format, and to object to or restrict certain uses of it. You can exercise the right to deletion yourself at any time via "Delete my account" in your dashboard, or contact us at phillipknairne@cc.cc for anything else. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you also have the right to complain to the UK's data protection regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), at ico.org.uk.

Children's privacy

The Wall is intended for adults running or promoting a business, and is not directed at children. We don't knowingly collect data from children.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
